my studio is interdisciplinary in practice but whole in concept. a lifestyle is comprised of inner and outer reflective and cumulative openings of awareness. as this happens a lot of questions can come up, which is where i come in. my styling services are for all aspects of sustainability in adornment; the body, the home, and the landscape.
luxury is like good design, it is born of necessity and makes everything less look overly complicated. the truly luxurious is experiential and subjective and yet maintains a universal high caliber of workmanship. no one can market luxury to you, for when they do it becomes less, just a push to reach a bottom line. in order to add luxury to the life it is necessary to pare down to the basic delight of the most beautiful essential nature of an object or a feeling. and objects certainly evoke feelings. so what is sustainable design? when it is good it perfectly fulfills function while supporting health in ecology, economy, and physiology. very simply, perfect design opens your heart just to look at it.
the possibilities in daily life of creating luxury within a sustainable framework are so delicious and this is my job description. ecofashion is my forte as well as sustainable interiors and permaculture design. permaculture is a horticultural-based systems science that creates self-reliance and whose princilples can be applied to both the forty acre parcel and the urban rooftop deck. it is luxury to feel beautifully adorned and to know just how those garments came to be, to watch dinner growing in the yard, to create a garden that waters itself with stored rainwater, to be able to share a surplus, to waste little but experience much. it is luxury to hear both the silence and the song.
my philosophy on sustainability is not extreme. i do believe that local can mean the back yard, the region, or the state but i also believe that the entire planet is a whole entity and that, all ecological impacts considered, there is no black and white when it comes to sustainability. it is important to carefully consider fear-based philosophies and decide whether you want to adopt that into your life. i prefer to consider a wide variety of elements that make up, for example, a sustainable trench coat created by Stella McCartney, and not all elements need to be present in order to make that garment a good sustainable choice. baby steps are ok as long as the long view is being taken. do we need beauty to sustain? always yes, as long as we are using that internal compass.
i am available for personal styling and beauty consulting, interior design consulting, and landscape design based on permaculture principles. i also have a specialty for tracking down hard to find apparel and sizes and am available for freelance writing. this blog is for all things margaret marks, nice and tidy, whatever the day brings.
Welcome to the land of Elemental Treats! I am an experienced cook and baker who, in June 2011, gave up grains, legumes, aged dairy, refined sugars, and packaged processed foods. I feel wonderful, I've never been healthier, and I've had to get very creative when desiring a truly high-vibration treat. After much trial and some error I've emerged victorious with excellent, delectable biscotti and truly decadent raw brownies. Eating Elementally means eating to strengthen and nourish the elemental centers that comprise the body. Our food needs to burn clean if we are to be clear. Treats included! My biscotti are organic, vegan, grain-free, and refined-sugar free. My brownies are organic, grain-free, and sugar-free.
